Community or The Reason I Cried on Sunday

KULA

I heard this word a few month’s ago during a yoga class - shout out to Kelly! It is the Sanskrit word for community. As I understand it, a kula is considered sacred because it is a group of people who come together, with intention and for a shared purpose. While I love the word to describe our Monday morning yoga class, I never fully understood it until this past Sunday.

Almost two years ago, ToniRose and I started doing Yin + Pin workshops. What are those? I’m glad you asked. They are the magic that happens when you combine yin yoga and acupuncture for two hours. Never attended but curious? Let me briefly walk you through one.

Picture it: a room full of yogi’s, we begin with a short meditation, throw in a mantra or a theme, stretch you into yin yoga poses for about 50 minutes, put some pins in your feet/hands/head (depending on the class), and let you snore for about 20-25 minutes. Occasionally, there are essential oils or crystals. Then you wake up feeling amazing and maybe a little acu-yoga-drunk.

Fast forward to the beginning of the month. ToniRose and I decide we should finally do a Yin + Pin photo shoot so we have marketing photos for upcoming workshops and our 2020 retreat (stay tuned). With less than three weeks to plan, we asked a bunch of our past attendees and friends if they would like to be our models and we book the photographer.

On Sunday, eleven beautiful souls came together for our event. They gave up their afternoons to be a part of something for us. I walked around that room with tears in my eyes. When you start a business or follow your passion, the fear of failure is overwhelming. Will anyone like what I have to offer? Will people want what I offer? Will enough people show up to keep the doors open? Sunday showed me that I have an amazing community, an amazing kula, and an amazing group of friends who support what ToniRose and I have been building for the last two years.

I know that I have written a lot of words already but I’m not sure there are any sufficient enough to describe how I felt on Sunday night. Thank you to everyone that attended. Thank you to ToniRose for believing in this workshop idea. Thank you to Finn for the beautiful photos. Thank you Hot Yoga Revolution for letting us use your beautiful space. My soul is so full and my heart is bursting.

Namaste
